A Man and His Family

In January 2000, Army veteran Mike Smith took a chance and started a logistics company from the guest room of his house. With a wife and two young daughters, Mike wanted to make a better life for him and his family. If there is anyone that knows Mike, they know that family comes first.

The guest room was located upstairs with a window looking outside to Somerset Drive. Being a one-man show at the beginning, he started each day in the early hours of the morning and worked until the late hours of the night. Neighbors on their daily walks eventually knew his office window and would wave as they walked by.

To get creative with his office furniture, Mike built his desk, where he had his daughters Shelby and Maggie supervising. In attempts to occupy his daughters while he was hard at work, Mike gave them Crayola markers to help “spruce up” the desk.

His wife, Tammy, Shelby and Maggie would help whenever they were driving and would see dry vans or flatbeds and write the carrier names down for Mike to call them. After all, information was not available at your fingertips like it is today!

Fast forward to 2016, Maggie joined the Somerset team, followed by Shelby in 2019. Mike and Tammy’s household values are to treat others with respect, integrity, and kindness above all. It is these family values we bring into the Somerset business.
